Indian philosophy has traditionally viewed the natural environment not as an external resource separated from human society but as an integral part of life, culture, morality, and spirituality. Forests, rivers, lakes, mountains, animals, soil, air, water, and other environmental elements have occupied an important place in Indian philosophical and religious traditions. The relationship between human beings and nature was generally understood through ideas of interconnectedness, harmony, reverence, restraint, and responsibility. Although the ancient Indian traditions did not formulate environmentalism in the modern scientific sense, many of their philosophical concepts encouraged respectful and sustainable relationships with the natural world. One of the fundamental ideas underlying Indian philosophical thought is the unity and interconnectedness of all forms of life. The Vedic tradition perceived nature as a living and sacred order. The concept of Ṛta, meaning cosmic order, emphasized that the universe functions according to an underlying principle of balance and harmony. Human beings were expected to conduct their lives in accordance with this cosmic order. Environmental elements were therefore not merely material objects but components of a larger universal system. Disturbing the balance of nature could be understood as disturbing the larger cosmic order. The Vedas contain numerous references to natural elements. The Earth is praised as a mother in the Atharvaveda's Prithvi Sukta, where the Earth is described as nourishing and sustaining all beings. The famous expression “Mata bhumih putro aham prithivyah” means, “The Earth is my mother and I am her son.” This idea establishes an intimate relationship between human beings and the Earth. The Earth is not treated simply as property to be exploited but as a life-giving entity deserving respect and protection. The hymn celebrates the fertility, diversity, mountains, rivers, plants, and other features of the Earth. Water also occupied a sacred position in Indian thought. Rivers, lakes, ponds, wells, and other water bodies were essential not only for agriculture and human survival but also for religious and cultural life. Rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Godavari, and Kaveri were revered as sacred entities. Water was associated with purification, fertility, health, and spiritual renewal. The reverence given to rivers demonstrates that water had both ecological and cultural significance. Traditional Indian communities developed practices for protecting and maintaining water bodies because their survival depended heavily upon them. Lakes and ponds similarly played an important role in traditional Indian environmental practices. Ancient settlements commonly developed around water sources. Stepwells, tanks, ponds, and reservoirs were constructed for collecting and conserving water. Such systems demonstrate an understanding of the seasonal nature of rainfall and the importance of storing water for dry periods. Traditional water-management systems such as temple tanks in South India and village ponds in northern and western India reflected a combination of ecological knowledge, social cooperation, and religious values. Water bodies were often associated with temples and sacred spaces, which could provide an additional cultural basis for their protection. Forests occupy an especially significant place in Indian philosophy and historical culture. In Vedic and later traditions, forests were regarded as places of learning, meditation, spiritual discipline, and social withdrawal. The concept of the Aranyaka is directly associated with the forest. The Aranyakas, or “forest texts,” developed philosophical reflections connected with Vedic traditions. Forests were therefore not considered empty or unproductive spaces. They were environments in which human beings could seek knowledge and spiritual insight. The institution of the ashrama system also reflects the importance of the forest. The Vanaprastha stage traditionally involved withdrawal from ordinary worldly activities and movement toward a simpler life connected with nature.
