Biodiversity refers to the variety of life found on Earth, including plants, animals, microorganisms, and the ecosystems in which they live. It exists at three main levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Forests, wetlands, grasslands, rivers, oceans, mountains, and agricultural landscapes all support different forms of life. Biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecological balance and supporting human survival. It provides food, medicines, fuel, timber, clean water, fertile soil, pollination, and many other resources. However, rapid population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, deforestation, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change are placing enormous pressure on biological resources. Therefore, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection are closely connected and are essential for sustainable development. ## Importance of Biodiversity Biodiversity plays a fundamental role in maintaining the stability and functioning of ecosystems. Every species performs certain ecological functions. Plants produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, insects and other animals help in pollination, microorganisms decompose organic matter, and predators help regulate populations of other organisms. The interaction of these organisms maintains ecological processes. Biodiversity is also important for human beings. Agriculture depends on genetic diversity in crops and livestock. Different varieties of plants may possess resistance to diseases, drought, pests, or changing climatic conditions. Wild plants and microorganisms are also important sources of medicines and other useful substances. Many communities depend directly on forests, fisheries, grasslands, and other ecosystems for their livelihoods. Biodiversity also has cultural, recreational, and aesthetic value. Rivers, forests, mountains, wildlife, and other natural environments are closely associated with the traditions and cultural practices of many communities. Natural landscapes also provide opportunities for tourism, recreation, education, and scientific research. ## Major Threats to Biodiversity One of the most serious threats to biodiversity is habitat destruction. Forests and wetlands are frequently converted for agriculture, roads, industries, housing, and other infrastructure. When habitats are destroyed or fragmented, many species lose their food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Deforestation is particularly harmful because forests contain a large proportion of terrestrial biodiversity. The removal of forests can cause soil erosion, changes in the water cycle, loss of wildlife habitat, and increased carbon emissions. Pollution is another major threat. Industrial waste, agricultural chemicals, plastics, sewage, and other pollutants can contaminate air, water, and soil. Aquatic organisms are particularly vulnerable to water pollution. Excessive fertiliser runoff can also cause eutrophication in lakes and rivers, reducing oxygen levels and harming aquatic life. Overexploitation of biological resources can also result in biodiversity loss. Excessive fishing, hunting, logging, collection of medicinal plants, and illegal wildlife trade can reduce populations of species beyond their ability to recover. Climate change is increasingly affecting biodiversity. Changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, sea levels, and the frequency of extreme weather events can alter habitats and disrupt the life cycles of plants and animals. Species that cannot adapt or migrate may face increased risks. Invasive alien species are another important threat. Species introduced outside their natural range may compete with native species for food and habitat, transmit diseases, or alter ecosystem processes. ## Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Environmental protection involves preventing or reducing damage to air, water,
