The fifth phase of development through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India represents a more mature and strategic approach to corporate contribution toward social and economic development. One of the key elements of this phase is the shift from philanthropy to strategic CSR. Earlier corporate social activities were often associated with donations, relief measures and charitable assistance. In the fifth phase, CSR projects are designed according to identified community needs and the long-term objectives of the organisation. Companies attempt to align their CSR programmes with their business capabilities while ensuring that social welfare remains the primary objective. For example, a company possessing technological expertise may undertake digital education, skill development or digital healthcare projects rather than limiting its contribution to financial donations. Another important element is the emphasis on sustainable development. CSR projects increasingly focus on creating benefits that continue after the initial funding period. Projects related to renewable energy, water conservation, sustainable agriculture, waste management, biodiversity protection and climate action reflect this approach. Sustainability means that CSR interventions should protect natural resources while improving economic and social conditions. A water conservation project, for instance, may include rainwater harvesting, watershed development and community participation so that the benefits remain available to future generations.
