It is different from financial appraisal because it considers the impact of the project on society and the economy rather than merely the organisation's expenditure. A livelihood-development project, for instance, may require substantial expenditure initially but can generate employment, increase household income, improve productivity and reduce economic vulnerability. Economic appraisal therefore considers both direct and indirect benefits. It is particularly useful when comparing alternative CSR projects competing for limited resources. Social appraisal is one of the most important techniques for CSR projects. It assesses the social relevance and likely social consequences of the proposed intervention. It examines questions such as whether the project addresses a genuine community problem, who will benefit, whether vulnerable groups will be included and whether the project promotes equality and social justice.
