In the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and programmes, project appraisal is particularly important because CSR investments are intended not merely to generate financial returns but also to create measurable social, environmental, and developmental benefits. A CSR project may relate to education, healthcare, sanitation, skill development, rural development, environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, livelihood promotion, or community infrastructure. Project appraisal helps an organisation determine whether a proposed CSR intervention is relevant to community needs, technically feasible, financially reasonable, socially beneficial, environmentally sustainable, and capable of achieving its intended objectives. The first purpose of project appraisal is to establish the need and relevance of the project. A CSR project should address a genuine social or environmental problem rather than merely satisfy organisational preferences. For example, before launching a skill-development programme in a rural area, a company should assess local unemployment, existing skills, market demand, availability of training institutions, and employment opportunities. Such assessment ensures that CSR resources are directed towards areas where they can generate meaningful benefits. Project appraisal also examines the technical feasibility of a project. Technical appraisal determines whether the proposed activities can actually be implemented with the available technology, infrastructure, human resources, and expertise. In a CSR healthcare project, for instance, the organisation must examine whether suitable medical facilities, trained professionals, equipment, transportation, and support systems are available. Technical feasibility reduces the possibility of project failure caused by inadequate resources or unrealistic assumptions. Financial appraisal is another important component. Although CSR projects are primarily development-oriented, financial resources must still be used efficiently and responsibly. Financial appraisal examines project costs, funding requirements, operating expenses, capital expenditure, maintenance costs, and the availability of funds.
