A computerised cataloguing module is an important component of an Integrated Library Management System (ILMS). It is used to create, store, organise, search, edit and maintain bibliographic records of library resources in a computerised database. For effective cataloguing, the module should satisfy certain basic requirements related to standards, data entry, storage, retrieval and maintenance. The first requirement is a suitable bibliographic database. The module should provide a structured database in which bibliographic information such as title, author, edition, publisher, place of publication, year, physical description, ISBN, subject and notes can be stored systematically. It should also provide separate fields for different elements of a bibliographic record. The second requirement is support for standard cataloguing rules and formats. The module should support recognised standards such as AACR2 or RDA for description and MARC 21 for machine-readable bibliographic records. It should also support standard classification and subject-heading systems used by the library. Another important requirement is authority control.
