Protocols and standards are essential for enabling computers and other digital devices to exchange data accurately and reliably across the Internet. Since the Internet connects millions of devices using different hardware, operating systems, networks, and applications, a common set of rules is required for communication. Protocols provide these rules, while standards ensure that the technologies used by different manufacturers and organizations are compatible with one another. A protocol is a set of rules that determines how data is prepared, transmitted, received, and interpreted between communicating devices. When a user sends information over the Internet, the data is divided into smaller units called packets. Protocols define how these packets are formatted, addressed, transmitted, routed, and reassembled at the destination. This makes communication possible even when the sender and receiver use different types of computers or networks. The Internet uses several important protocols, each performing a particular function. The Internet Protocol (IP) is responsible mainly for addressing and routing packets. Every device communicating over an IP network has an IP address that helps identify its destination. Routers examine the destination IP address of packets and forward them through appropriate networks until they reach the intended device. IPv4 and IPv6 are
