Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals play an important role in the creation, organization, preservation, dissemination and use of knowledge. In the contemporary information society, libraries are no longer merely places where books are stored. They have become dynamic knowledge centres, and LIS professionals facilitate access to information in both traditional and digital environments. Therefore, the statement that “Library and Information Science professionals are knowledge professionals” can be supported, although certain limitations and opposing views also need consideration. In favour of the statement, LIS professionals possess specialized knowledge and skills for managing the information and knowledge resources of society. They select, acquire, classify, catalogue, index, preserve and retrieve information in systematic ways. Classification schemes, metadata, bibliographic control and information retrieval techniques require professional expertise. By organizing scattered information into accessible structures, LIS professionals transform information resources into usable knowledge. LIS professionals also act as intermediaries between users and information. In the digital age, the problem is not simply lack of information but the availability of enormous quantities of information of varying quality. Professionals help users identify relevant, reliable and authoritative sources.
