Frustration is a psychological state that occurs when an individual’s goal-directed behaviour is blocked or when a desired need, motive, or objective cannot be fulfilled. In behavioural sciences, frustration is considered an important aspect of human behaviour because individuals frequently encounter obstacles in personal, social, educational, and occupational life. The reaction to frustration varies from person to person depending upon personality, emotional maturity, past experiences, social environment, nature of the obstacle, and the importance of the goal. Some people respond constructively, whereas others may show aggression, withdrawal, anxiety, or other maladaptive behaviours. One of the most common reactions to frustration is aggression. When an individual is prevented from achieving a desired goal, anger and hostility may develop. Aggression may be directed towards the person or object responsible for the frustration, or it may be displaced onto another person or object. For example, an employee who is unfairly criticized by a superior may become angry with the superior, but if direct expression is difficult, the employee may take out the anger on family members or colleagues. Aggression can be verbal, such as shouting or insulting, or physical, such as hitting or damaging objects. Another important reaction is displacement. In displacement, the individual transfers emotional reactions from the actual source of frustration to a safer or less threatening target. This often occurs when the original source is too powerful or dangerous to confront. For instance, a student who is scolded by a teacher may feel unable to argue with the teacher and may later behave aggressively towards a younger sibling. Displacement
