A scatter diagram, also known as a scatter plot or scatter graph, is an important graphical technique used in research methodology and statistical analysis for studying the relationship between two quantitative variables. One variable is generally placed on the horizontal axis, or X-axis, while the other is placed on the vertical axis, or Y-axis. In research, investigators are often interested in determining whether changes in one variable are associated with changes in another variable. For example, a researcher may want to study the relationship between advertising expenditure and sales, income and consumption, study hours and examination marks, price and demand, or employee training and productivity. A scatter diagram provides a simple visual method for examining such relationships before applying more advanced statistical techniques such as correlation and regression analysis. The construction of a scatter diagram begins with the identification of two variables. The independent or explanatory variable is generally represented on the X-axis, while the dependent or response variable is represented on the Y-axis. Data are collected in paired observations. For every value of X, there is a corresponding value of Y. Each pair is represented by a single point on the graph. After all observations are plotted, the overall pattern of the points is examined. The major purpose of a scatter diagram is to determine whether a relationship exists between the variables.
