# Nominal Scale and Ordinal Scale In research methodology and statistical analysis, measurement scales are used to classify and organize data in a meaningful manner. The level of measurement determines how data can be collected, classified, compared, and statistically analyzed. Among the four commonly recognized levels of measurement—nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio—the nominal and ordinal scales are particularly important for handling qualitative and categorical information. Although both scales deal with categories, they differ significantly in terms of the information they provide and the statistical operations that can appropriately be performed on them. The nominal scale is the simplest level of measurement. It is used to classify observations into distinct categories or groups based on characteristics or attributes. The categories have names or labels, but they do not possess any natural order or ranking. The numbers assigned to nominal categories are merely codes and do not represent quantities. For example, in a survey, respondents may be classified according to gender, blood group, religion, type of residence, occupation, or preferred brand. If occupation is coded as 1 for teacher, 2 for doctor, 3 for engineer, and 4 for businessperson, these numbers are only identification codes. They do not indicate that a businessperson has a greater or smaller occupational value than a teacher. The main characteristic of nominal measurement is mutual exclusiveness. Ideally, each observation should belong to one category only. The categories should also be collectively exhaustive, meaning that the classification should cover all relevant possibilities or provide an appropriate “other” category. For instance, if researchers study the preferred mode of transportation among students, categories such as bus, train, bicycle, car, and walking can be used.
