Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is a participatory approach to development planning and management that enables rural communities to analyse their own conditions, identify their problems and resources, and participate actively in planning and implementing development activities. It emerged from earlier approaches such as Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA), but placed greater emphasis on local people's knowledge, participation, empowerment and ownership. PRA views rural people not merely as beneficiaries or respondents but as active partners and analysts of their own development. The central idea of PRA is that local communities possess valuable knowledge about their environment, livelihoods, social relationships, institutions and problems. Development planners and facilitators therefore work with communities to understand local realities rather than imposing solutions from outside. The approach is particularly useful in rural development because it helps connect formal planning with people's actual needs and priorities.
