Networking of libraries refers to the establishment of systematic links among libraries through communication technologies, common standards, cooperative policies and shared information systems. In the context of Informetrics and Scientometrics, library networking is particularly important because it facilitates the collection, organization, exchange and analysis of large volumes of bibliographic and scientific information. The statement that “Networking of Libraries is the best way to make resource sharing effective” can be understood through the growing need for cooperation among libraries in an information-intensive environment. Resource sharing means making the information resources of one library available to users of other libraries. No individual library can acquire every book, journal, database, thesis, conference proceeding or electronic resource required by its users because of limitations of finance, space and staff. Networking provides a mechanism through which libraries can collectively utilize their resources. A user can locate and obtain a document available in another participating library through union catalogues, inter-library loan and document delivery services.
