# Ecosystem Approach The ecosystem approach is an important perspective in environmental anthropology that studies human beings as an integral part of the ecological systems in which they live. It emphasizes the dynamic relationship between human societies, other living organisms, and the physical environment. Rather than viewing culture and nature as separate domains, the ecosystem approach considers them interconnected components of a larger system. Human activities influence ecosystems, while environmental conditions, in turn, shape human subsistence, settlement, economy, technology, social organization, and cultural beliefs. The concept of an ecosystem was developed in ecology, particularly through the work of British ecologist A. G. Tansley, who introduced the term “ecosystem” in 1935. An ecosystem consists of living organisms and their physical surroundings interacting as a functional unit. Anthropologists adopted ecological perspectives to understand how human populations adapt to environmental conditions. Julian Steward’s theory of cultural ecology was especially significant in this development. Steward argued that particular cultural practices are related to the ways people adapt to their environments and organize production. Later, anthropologists such as Roy Rappaport and Andrew Vayda expanded ecological approaches by examining the relationships among population, resources, subsistence practices, social institutions, and environmental processes. The ecosystem approach differs from a purely environmental determinist perspective. Environmental determinism assumes that the physical environment directly determines human behaviour and culture. The ecosystem approach, in contrast, recognizes reciprocal interaction. Humans modify their environments through agriculture, pastoralism, hunting, fishing, settlement, industry, and technology, while environmental changes affect human societies. Thus, the relationship is dynamic rather than one-directional. A central feature of the ecosystem approach is the concept of interdependence. Human communities depend on ecosystems for food, water, fuel, medicines, shelter, and other resources. At the same time, their activities can maintain, transform, or degrade ecological systems. For example, traditional agricultural communities may develop crop-rotation systems, mixed farming, water-conservation practices, and locally adapted seed varieties that maintain soil fertility and biodiversity. In contrast, intensive agriculture, deforestation, mining, and excessive extraction of natural resources may disrupt ecological balance. The approach also focuses on adaptation. Adaptation refers to the biological, cultural, technological, and social mechanisms through which human populations respond to environmental conditions. Different societies living in different ecological settings develop distinctive forms of adaptation. Pastoral communities in dry regions may depend on mobility and seasonal livestock movement, while communities in river valleys may develop irrigation agriculture.
