The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) is an important public health programme of India aimed at reducing the growing burden of major non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and stroke are responsible for a large proportion of illness, disability, premature death and healthcare expenditure. The programme focuses on prevention, early detection, treatment, referral and follow-up care, with special attention to strengthening health services at the community and primary healthcare levels. NPCDCS was launched by the Government of India in 2010 in selected districts and was subsequently expanded across the country.
