# Lead Poisoning and Measures for its Prevention Lead poisoning is a serious environmental and public health problem caused by excessive exposure to lead. Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can enter the human body through contaminated food, water, air, dust, soil, or occupational exposure. It can affect people of all ages, but children are particularly vulnerable because their developing nervous systems are more sensitive to its harmful effects. Even relatively low levels of lead exposure may cause health problems, especially when exposure continues for a long period. Common sources of lead exposure include lead-based paints, contaminated drinking water, industrial emissions, batteries, certain cosmetics and traditional medicines, glazed pottery, contaminated soil, and dust from old buildings. Workers involved in battery manufacturing, mining, smelting, painting, construction, welding, and recycling may face greater occupational exposure.
