A system of particles can be described in several ways depending on the information used to specify the state of the system. In statistical mechanics and general physical chemistry, two important concepts used for describing the distribution of particles are permutation and configuration. Although both are concerned with the arrangement of particles among available states, they are not identical. The main difference arises from whether the individual identity of particles is taken into account. A configuration describes the distribution of particles among the available energy states, cells, or regions of phase space without necessarily distinguishing between individual particles. It tells us how many particles occupy each state. For example, suppose there are three particles and two available states, A and B. A configuration may be represented as [ (2,1) ] meaning that two particles are in state A and one particle is in state B. The configuration provides information about the occupation numbers of the different states. It is therefore a description of the overall distribution of particles rather than a specification of which particular particle occupies which state. A permutation, on the other hand, refers to a particular assignment or ordering of individual particles among the available states. In a permutation, the identities or labels of particles are considered. If the three particles are labelled 1, 2, and 3 and there are two states A and B, the configuration containing two particles in A and one in B can be realized through several different permutations. For example, [ 1_A,;2_A,;3_B ] is one permutation, while [ 1_A,;3_A,;2_B ] is another. Both correspond to the same configuration because in both cases two particles occupy A and one occupies B. They differ only in the identities of the particles occupying the states. Thus, a configuration represents the occupation pattern, whereas a permutation represents a specific assignment of particles to that occupation pattern. The distinction becomes clearer when the number of particles and states is increased. Suppose four distinguishable particles, 1, 2, 3, and 4, are distributed among three states A, B, and C. Consider the configuration [ (2,1,1). ] This means that two particles are in A, one particle is in B, and one particle is in C. The configuration itself does not specify which two particles are in A. If the particles are distinguishable, several permutations can produce this same configuration. For example, [ (1_A,2_A,3_B,4_C) ] and [ (2_A,4_A,1_B,3_C) ] represent different permutations but the same configuration ((2,1,1)). For distinguishable particles, the number of permutations corresponding to a particular configuration can be calculated using the multinomial expression [ W=\frac{N!}{n_1!n_2!\cdots n_k!}, ] where (N) is the total number of particles, (k) is the number of available states, and (n_i) is the number of particles occupying state (i). For the configuration ((2,1,1)) involving four particles, [ W=\frac{4!}{2!1!1!}=12. ] Therefore, twelve different permutations correspond to this one configuration. This illustrates an important relationship: one configuration can correspond to many permutations when the particles are distinguishable. The concept of permutation is particularly useful when calculating the number of possible microscopic arrangements of a system. A microscopic state gives detailed information about the individual particles, whereas a macroscopic description usually requires only occupation numbers. Many different microscopic arrangements may produce the same
