Dinitrogen complexes are coordination compounds in which molecular nitrogen, N₂, acts as a ligand and coordinates to a metal atom through its nitrogen lone pair. Although N₂ is chemically very stable because of its strong triple bond, it can coordinate to certain transition metals, particularly metals having suitable electron density and vacant orbitals. The most important metals forming dinitrogen complexes are those of the early and middle transition series, especially titanium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt, nickel and some of the platinum-group metals. Complexes of molybdenum, tungsten and iron are particularly important because they are relevant to the activation and reduction of atmospheric nitrogen. Dinitrogen may coordinate to a metal in several ways. The most common mode is end-on coordination (η¹-N₂), in which one nitrogen atom is directly bonded to the metal. In some complexes, N₂ can also act as a bridging ligand between two metal
