Rural water supply is a critical component of public health and hospital and health-service management because safe drinking water is essential for preventing communicable diseases, improving hygiene, and reducing the burden on rural health facilities. In India, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched in 2019 with the objective of providing functional household tap connections to rural households and ensuring adequate, safe and regular drinking water supply. From a health-services perspective, inadequate access to safe water contributes to diarrhoeal diseases, cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, intestinal infections and other water-related illnesses. Women and children are often disproportionately affected because they traditionally spend considerable time collecting water. Therefore, rural water supply improves not only health outcomes but also access to education, productivity and quality of life. The Jal Jeevan Mission follows a community-oriented approach. Its major focus is on providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to rural households. The mission also emphasizes source sustainability,
