# Remote Sensing and GIS in Archaeology Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) have emerged as important technological tools in archaeology and have significantly expanded the scope of applied anthropology. Archaeology traditionally depended on excavation, surface surveys, historical records and direct observation to identify and interpret archaeological remains. Although these methods remain essential, they can be time-consuming, expensive and sometimes destructive. Remote sensing and GIS provide non-invasive, spatially oriented techniques for locating archaeological sites, documenting cultural landscapes, analysing environmental relationships and supporting the conservation and management of archaeological heritage. Their application is particularly relevant to applied anthropology because they connect anthropological knowledge with practical problems of heritage preservation, cultural resource management, environmental planning and community development. Remote sensing refers to the collection of information about the Earth's surface without direct physical contact with the objects being studied. It commonly uses satellite imagery, aerial photography, drones, LiDAR, radar and other sensors. Archaeologists use these technologies to identify features that may not be easily visible from the ground. Buried structures, ancient roads, field boundaries, settlements, irrigation systems, canals, defensive walls and other archaeological remains can sometimes produce differences in vegetation, soil moisture, elevation or surface temperature. These differences may appear as patterns in remotely sensed images and can provide clues about archaeological sites. Aerial photography was among the earliest forms of remote sensing used in archaeology. Archaeological features may create distinctive patterns known as crop marks, soil marks and shadow marks. For example, vegetation growing over buried walls may be shorter or less healthy than surrounding vegetation, while vegetation over buried ditches may grow more strongly because of greater soil depth and moisture. Such differences can reveal the outlines of ancient structures and settlements. Aerial photographs therefore help archaeologists identify possible sites before conducting detailed field investigations. Satellite remote sensing has further strengthened archaeological research by providing extensive spatial coverage. Multispectral satellite images record information in different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Archaeologists can analyse these spectral differences to distinguish vegetation, exposed soil, water bodies and archaeological features. High-resolution imagery is particularly useful for mapping ancient settlements and cultural landscapes. Repeated satellite observations can also help monitor changes in archaeological sites caused by agriculture, construction, erosion, mining, urbanisation and other human activities. LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, is another important remote-sensing technology. It uses laser pulses to measure distances and produce highly detailed three-dimensional models of the Earth's surface. One of its major advantages is the ability to identify subtle variations in terrain, even beneath forest canopies. This has transformed archaeological research in densely forested regions. Ancient roads, terraces, platforms, mounds, settlements and other landscape modifications can be detected from LiDAR-derived elevation models. Thus, remote sensing can reveal the spatial organisation of past societies without extensive excavation. Drone-based remote sensing has also become increasingly useful because unmanned aerial vehicles can collect high-resolution photographs and other spatial data over relatively small areas. Archaeologists can use drones to create orthophotos, digital elevation models and three-dimensional representations of archaeological sites. These products assist in detailed documentation, site mapping and condition assessment. Drones are especially useful in areas that are difficult or dangerous to access. Their relatively low cost also makes them valuable for archaeological projects with limited resources. GIS is a computer-based system used to collect, store, manage, analyse and display geographically referenced information. In archaeology, GIS allows researchers to integrate archaeological data with environmental, demographic
