A payment gateway acts as an intermediary between the customer, merchant, bank, and payment network. It securely transfers payment information and helps in authorising transactions. Without an efficient payment gateway, an e-commerce business would find it difficult to accept online payments safely, quickly, and conveniently. When a customer purchases a product from an e-commerce website, the payment gateway becomes involved at the payment stage. The customer selects a preferred payment method, enters the required payment details, and submits the transaction. The payment gateway encrypts the sensitive information and sends it securely to the appropriate payment processor or acquiring bank. The transaction is then routed through the relevant card network or banking system to the customer's issuing bank. The issuing bank checks whether the transaction can be approved. The approval or rejection response is sent back through the payment network and payment gateway to the merchant. If approved, the order is confirmed and the customer receives a payment confirmation. The major function of a payment gateway is transaction authorisation. It verifies whether the customer has sufficient funds or credit and whether the payment details are valid. It also performs security checks to identify suspicious transactions. Another important function is encryption. Payment information such as card numbers, expiry dates, and authentication details is sensitive and must be protected from unauthorised access. Payment gateways use encryption and other security mechanisms to protect information while it is transmitted between different parties. Payment gateways support several payment methods. Credit cards and debit cards are among the traditional methods used for online purchases.
