Medical Anthropology is a branch of anthropology concerned with understanding health, illness, disease, healing, and health-care practices in their cultural, social, economic, and environmental contexts. It examines how people understand the causes of illness, how they experience disease, why they seek particular forms of treatment, and how health systems influence individuals and communities. In Epidemiology and Public Health, Medical Anthropology is important because disease is not determined only by biological factors. Social organization, cultural beliefs, occupation, poverty, gender, religion, environment, education, and access to health services also influence patterns of health and disease. Traditional biomedical approaches generally explain disease through biological and physiological mechanisms. Epidemiology similarly studies the distribution and determinants of diseases in populations by examining factors such as age, sex, exposure, environment, occupation, and socioeconomic conditions. Medical Anthropology complements these approaches by examining the meanings that individuals and communities attach to health and illness. It helps public health professionals understand why people may accept, reject, delay, or modify recommended health interventions. One of the central concerns of Medical Anthropology is the concept of culture. Culture influences people's understanding of what constitutes health, illness, normality, and abnormality. Different communities may have different explanations for the same illness. A disease may be attributed to infection or nutritional deficiency from a biomedical perspective, while a community may interpret it in terms of supernatural forces, imbalance, social conflict, food practices, or religious beliefs. Such interpretations affect treatment-seeking behaviour and compliance with public health recommendations. Medical Anthropology also distinguishes between disease and illness. Disease generally refers to a pathological condition recognized through biomedical knowledge, whereas illness refers to the individual's subjective experience of sickness. A person may experience pain, weakness, or distress even when clinical investigations do not identify a specific disease. Conversely, an individual may have a chronic disease but feel healthy because symptoms are absent. Understanding this distinction is useful in public health
