Maternal feminism is a perspective within feminist thought that places motherhood, women’s reproductive roles, and the social value of caregiving at the centre of discussions about gender and power. It emerged prominently during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in societies where women’s political and economic rights were restricted. Maternal feminists argued that women should not have to abandon or hide their identities as mothers in order to claim rights and participate in public life. Instead, they used women’s socially recognised roles as mothers to challenge male-dominated institutions and to demand greater respect, protection, and political influence for women. The concept is closely connected with the relationship between gender and power. In patriarchal societies, power has traditionally been associated with men, particularly through control over political institutions, property, employment, education, and decision-making. Women were frequently associated with the private sphere of the home, while men dominated the public sphere. Maternal feminism challenged this division by arguing that the responsibilities of motherhood gave women important knowledge and moral authority that could be applied to social and political issues. By presenting motherhood as a source of strength rather than weakness, maternal feminists attempted to transform women’s position within society. One of the important foundations of maternal feminism was the idea that motherhood involved special responsibilities toward children and society. Women were often expected to raise children, maintain households, and protect family welfare. Maternal feminists argued that these responsibilities should give women a greater voice in matters affecting families and communities. If women were responsible for raising future citizens, they argued, they should also have a role in determining the social, educational, economic, and political conditions in which those children lived. This argument allowed women to enter public debates without completely rejecting the traditional expectations surrounding femininity. During periods when women’s participation in politics was considered inappropriate, appeals based on motherhood could provide a socially acceptable justification for political activism. Women could argue that they were not entering public life merely for personal ambition but because their responsibilities as mothers required them to address issues such as education, child welfare, public health, poverty, sanitation, alcohol abuse, and working conditions. Maternal feminism therefore became an important basis for women’s social reform movements. Women involved in reform campaigns frequently established organisations concerned with children, families, education, health, and poverty. They campaigned against conditions that harmed women and children, including unsafe workplaces, inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and exploitative labour. Their activism demonstrated that issues traditionally regarded as private household concerns were actually connected with broader structures of political and economic power. The maternal feminist approach also challenged the strict separation between the private and public spheres. Patriarchal ideology often treated domestic work as a private responsibility belonging naturally to women. Maternal feminists demonstrated that household and caregiving activities had wider social consequences. The health of children, quality of education, family income, nutrition, and domestic conditions were not merely private matters. They were influenced by laws, labour markets, public institutions, and government policies. By connecting motherhood with public responsibility, maternal feminists helped politicise issues that had previously been ignored.
