Fire is a rapid chemical reaction in which a combustible substance reacts with oxygen in the presence of sufficient heat, producing heat, light, flames, smoke, and various combustion products. In hazardous material management, proper classification of fire is essential because different types of fires require different extinguishing agents and emergency response procedures. Using an unsuitable extinguishing agent can increase the severity of the incident, especially when hazardous chemicals are involved. Fire is commonly classified into different classes according to the type of fuel involved. Class A fires involve ordinary combustible solid materials such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, plastics, and many forms of waste. These materials generally produce glowing embers when they burn. Water is commonly effective for Class A fires because it cools the burning material and reduces its temperature below the ignition point. Foam and certain dry chemical extinguishing agents may also be used. Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids and substances such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, paints, solvents, alcohols, and oils. Water should generally not be applied directly to burning flammable liquids because it can spread the burning liquid and make the situation worse. Foam, dry chemical powder, and carbon dioxide extinguishers are commonly used depending on the specific material and
