# Synthesis of Benzotriazole from ortho-Phenylenediamine Benzotriazole is a heterocyclic aromatic compound containing a benzene ring fused with a five-membered ring having three nitrogen atoms. It is an important compound in organic chemistry and is widely used as a corrosion inhibitor, photographic chemical, pharmaceutical intermediate, and stabilizer for metals and polymers. Benzotriazole can be conveniently synthesised from ortho-phenylenediamine (o-phenylenediamine) by diazotisation followed by intramolecular cyclisation. The reaction involves conversion of one amino group of o-phenylenediamine into a diazonium group, followed by attack of the second amino group and formation of the N–N bond required for the benzotriazole ring. The starting material is ortho-phenylenediamine, which has two amino groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms of a benzene ring. Its structure can be represented as: C₆H₄(NH₂)₂ The synthesis is generally carried out using sodium nitrite and a mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid, under controlled temperature conditions. Sodium nitrite in the presence of hydrochloric acid generates nitrous acid in situ: NaNO₂ + HCl → HNO₂ + NaCl Nitrous acid is responsible for the diazotisation of o-phenylenediamine. In the first stage, one of the amino groups of o-phenylenediamine undergoes diazotisation. The amino group is protonated under acidic conditions, making it suitable for reaction with the nitrosating species generated from nitrous acid. Nitrous acid produces the active nitrosonium ion, NO⁺, in the acidic medium. The formation of this electrophilic species may be represented as: HNO₂ + H⁺ → H₂NO₂⁺ → NO⁺ + H₂O The nitrosonium ion then reacts with the amino group of o-phenylenediamine. The nitrogen atom of the amino group attacks the electrophilic nitrosonium species, producing an N-nitroso intermediate. After proton transfers and loss of water, a diazonium ion is formed. Thus, one –NH₂ group is converted into a diazonium group: o-H₂N–C₆H₄–NH₂ → o-H₂N–C₆H₄–N₂⁺ This intermediate is an o-aminobenzenediazonium ion. The presence of the second amino group at the ortho position is particularly important. It provides the necessary nucleophilic nitrogen atom for intramolecular ring closure. The diazonium group is strongly electrophilic, while the neighbouring amino nitrogen has a lone pair of electrons
