Excel is a spreadsheet software application developed by Microsoft and is widely used for storing, organizing, processing, analysing, and presenting numerical and non-numerical data. For example, sex may be coded as 1 for male and 2 for female, while marital status may be coded using numerical categories. Consistent coding allows quantitative analysis to be performed easily. Researchers can also use data validation to restrict entries to appropriate values and thereby reduce errors during data entry. Excel is useful for data cleaning and editing.
