# Factors Responsible for Maintaining Normal Lactation Lactation is the physiological process by which the mammary glands produce and secrete breast milk after childbirth. Normal lactation is essential for the nutrition, growth, immunity and psychological development of the newborn. Successful lactation depends on the coordinated action of the breasts, endocrine hormones, nervous system, maternal health and effective suckling by the baby. The process begins during pregnancy and continues after delivery when hormonal changes stimulate milk production and regular removal of milk maintains secretion.
