# Isoquants and Their Properties An isoquant is a curve that represents different combinations of two factors of production, such as labour and capital, which can produce the same level of output. The term “isoquant” is derived from two Greek words: “iso” meaning equal and “quant” meaning quantity. Thus, an isoquant is also called an equal-product curve. It is an important analytical tool in microeconomics because it helps explain how a producer can substitute one input for another while maintaining a constant level of production. The shape of an isoquant depends primarily on the degree of substitutability between the factors of production. If labour and capital can easily substitute for each other, the isoquant will have a different shape from the situation in which they are perfect complements. The major shapes of isoquants based on the degree of substitutability are discussed below. When the factors of production are perfect substitutes, one factor can be substituted for another at a constant rate without affecting the level of output. For example, suppose a producer can use either labour or a machine to perform the same task. If one unit of labour can always be replaced by two units of capital, irrespective of the quantities already being used, the factors are perfect substitutes. In this case, the isoquant is a straight downward-sloping line. Its slope remains constant because the marginal rate of technical substitution is constant. A producer can choose any combination of labour and capital lying on the same isoquant and obtain the same output. The degree of substitutability is therefore complete. The second possibility arises when factors are perfect complements. In this situation, the inputs must be used in a fixed proportion, and one factor cannot effectively replace the other. For example, a particular machine may require one trained operator to function properly. Adding more machines without additional operators, or adding more operators without machines, does not increase output. The isoquant in such a case is L-shaped or right-angled. The corner of the isoquant represents the technically efficient combination of inputs. The horizontal and vertical portions indicate that increasing only one factor while keeping the other constant does not increase production. Here, the marginal rate of technical substitution is either zero or undefined along different portions of the isoquant, while substitution between the inputs is not possible in the usual sense. A more common shape is the smooth, convex isoquant, which occurs when labour and capital are imperfect substitutes. In actual production processes, factors can generally substitute for one another, but not at a constant rate. For example, a firm may replace some capital with additional labour, but as more and more capital is replaced by labour, increasingly larger quantities of labour may be required to compensate for each additional unit of capital. Therefore, the marginal rate of technical substitution diminishes as substitution takes place. The isoquant is downward sloping and convex to the origin.
