Symbols occupy a central place in the psychoanalytical study of folklore because folk narratives, songs, rituals, myths, legends, fairy tales, proverbs, and customary practices often express meanings indirectly. Psychoanalysis, particularly the ideas associated with Sigmund Freud and later theorists such as Carl Jung, considers symbols as representations of psychological desires, fears, conflicts, memories, and impulses that may not be openly expressed. In folklore, communities preserve such symbolic forms over generations, allowing unconscious or emotionally significant experiences to find expression in culturally acceptable ways. Thus, the psychoanalytical approach does not treat a folk form merely as entertainment or as a record of social customs; it attempts to discover the hidden psychological meanings beneath its visible surface. Freud's psychoanalytical theory provides an important foundation for understanding symbols in folklore. According to Freud, human behaviour is influenced by unconscious wishes and conflicts. Many of these wishes, especially those connected with sexuality, aggression, fear, childhood experiences, and family relationships, may be repressed because they are unacceptable to the conscious mind or to social morality. Repressed desires do not disappear; instead, they may return indirectly through dreams, fantasies, slips of speech, artistic creations, myths, and folk narratives. Symbols are therefore important because they provide a disguised form through which unconscious wishes can be expressed. Freud's interpretation of dreams is particularly relevant to the study of folk forms. He distinguished between the manifest content of a dream, which is the form directly remembered, and its latent content, which consists of hidden wishes and conflicts. Symbols operate as part of the process through which latent psychological material becomes acceptable to consciousness. A similar process can be applied to folklore. A story may appear to be about a magical object, a dangerous forest, a monstrous creature, or a heroic journey, while psychologically it may represent deeper anxieties or desires.
