In statistical analysis, a frequency distribution is a systematic arrangement of data that shows how often different values or classes occur in a dataset. It is an important tool in research methodology because raw data collected through observation, surveys, experiments, interviews, or other research methods are often difficult to understand when presented in an unorganized form. Frequency distributions summarize large amounts of data and make it easier to identify patterns, compare groups, calculate statistical measures, and interpret research findings. Two important forms of frequency distribution are discrete frequency distribution and continuous frequency distribution. Although both are used to organize quantitative data, they differ in the nature of the observations and the method used to form classes. A discrete frequency distribution is a frequency distribution in which the values of a variable are distinct, separate, and generally countable. The observations do not take every possible value within an interval. Instead, they occur as specific numerical values. Discrete data are usually obtained through counting rather than measurement. Examples include the number of children in a family, number of students in a household, number of books owned by a student, number of accidents occurring in a month, number of visits made to a hospital, or number of defective items in a sample. In a discrete frequency distribution, each individual value of the variable is generally listed separately, followed by its corresponding frequency. For example, suppose the number of books read by ten students during a month is 2, 3, 1, 4, 2, 3, 2, 5, 4, and 3. The data can be arranged as follows: | Number of books | Frequency | | --------------- | --------: | | 1 | 1 | | 2 | 3 | | 3 | 3 | | 4 | 2 | | 5 | 1 | The frequency indicates the number of times each value occurs. The total of all frequencies is equal to the total number of observations. In this example, the total frequency is 10. A discrete frequency distribution can also be represented using tally marks. Tally marks provide a convenient way to count observations while collecting or organizing data. Once the tally marks have been completed, they are converted into numerical frequencies. This method reduces the possibility of counting errors, particularly when the dataset is relatively large. An important characteristic of discrete frequency distribution is that the variable usually has separate values with gaps between them. For example, the number of children in a family may be 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, but it cannot normally be 2.5 children. Similarly, the number of vehicles owned by a household is a countable variable. Discrete variables are therefore commonly associated with whole numbers, although the mathematical nature of discreteness depends on the variable rather than merely on whether the values are integers. Discrete frequency distributions are particularly useful in social science, education, business, health research, population studies, and experimental research. For example, a researcher studying household size can prepare a discrete frequency distribution showing the number of households having one, two, three, four, or more members. Similarly, an education researcher may organize data according to the number of subjects in which students obtained particular grades
