Ecological succession is the natural, gradual, and orderly process through which the structure and composition of a biological community change over time. It involves the replacement of one community by another until a relatively stable community is established. Ecological succession occurs because environmental conditions change as organisms grow, reproduce, die, and modify their surroundings. It is an important ecological process because it explains how ecosystems develop, recover after disturbances, and maintain ecological balance. From the perspective of environmental health, succession is significant because it influences soil formation, water regulation, biodiversity, nutrient cycling, climate regulation, and the quality of habitats supporting human health. Ecological succession begins with a relatively simple community and progresses through several stages. The first stage is called nudation, in which a new or exposed area becomes available for colonization. Nudation may occur due to natural events such as volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, forest fires, droughts, or glacial retreat. Human activities such as mining, construction, deforestation, overgrazing, and intensive agriculture can also create bare or disturbed areas. The second stage is invasion. Organisms enter the newly available area, become established, and reproduce. Invasion consists of migration, establishment, and colonization. Seeds, spores, microorganisms, insects, and other organisms may reach the area through wind, water, animals, or human activities. Species capable of surviving harsh environmental conditions usually appear first. The third stage is competition and co-action. As the number of organisms increases, they compete for resources such as sunlight, water, nutrients, space, and food. Organisms also interact with one another through predation, parasitism, mutualism, and other ecological relationships.
