# Tools and Techniques Used in Anthropological Research Anthropological research is concerned with the systematic study of human beings, their cultures, societies, institutions, behaviour, beliefs, traditions and ways of life. Since anthropology studies people in their natural social and cultural settings, researchers require a variety of tools and techniques for collecting reliable and meaningful information. Anthropological research generally combines qualitative and quantitative methods, with particular emphasis on fieldwork, direct observation and interaction with the community. The choice of tools and techniques depends upon the objectives of the research, nature of the population, cultural context and type of information required. Fieldwork is one of the most important techniques of anthropological research. It involves the researcher’s direct presence in the community or social setting being studied for a considerable period. Through fieldwork, the anthropologist obtains first-hand information about social relationships, customs, economic activities, religious practices, political organisation and everyday life. Long-term fieldwork helps the researcher understand cultural practices from the perspective of the people themselves. It also enables the development of rapport and trust between the researcher and the community. Participant observation is a distinctive technique of anthropology. In this method, the researcher observes the activities of people while participating, to varying degrees, in their everyday life. The anthropologist may attend festivals, observe rituals, participate in economic activities or live with families. Participant observation provides information not only about what people say but also about what they actually do. It is particularly useful for studying behaviour, social interaction, values and cultural practices that may not be fully revealed through formal questioning. Non-participant observation is another useful technique in which the researcher observes activities without actively participating in them. It may be used when direct participation is inappropriate or when the researcher wishes to maintain greater observational distance. Systematic observation can be supported by observation schedules, field notes, checklists and recording devices. The interview is a major tool for collecting primary information. Anthropologists use structured, semi-structured and unstructured interviews according to the objectives of the study. A structured interview follows a predetermined
