Conveyors are widely used in construction activities for transporting materials such as concrete, aggregates, bricks, sand, cement, debris and other loads from one location to another. Although conveyors improve productivity and reduce manual handling, they can cause serious accidents such as entanglement, crushing, falls, struck-by injuries, material spillage and electrical shocks. Therefore, employers must take systematic safety measures to ensure that conveyors are properly designed, installed, operated, inspected and maintained. Employers should first ensure that every conveyor is suitable for the intended work and has adequate capacity for the type, weight and quantity of material being transported. The conveyor should be designed and installed according to applicable safety standards and manufacturers' instructions. Its supporting structure must be strong, stable and capable of carrying both the conveyor and the maximum expected load. Conveyors should be positioned so that they do not create unnecessary hazards to workers, vehicles, scaffolds, machinery or other construction activities. All moving parts of conveyors must be adequately guarded. Particular attention should be given to nip points, pinch points, gears, sprockets, chains, pulleys, belts and rotating shafts where workers may become caught or crushed. Guards should be securely fixed and should not be removed while the conveyor is operating. Where access to moving parts is necessary for maintenance, the equipment should first be stopped, isolated and secured against accidental starting. Employers should provide emergency stop devices at suitable and easily accessible locations along the conveyor. Emergency pull cords, stop switches or other suitable devices should be installed where necessary so that workers can stop the conveyor quickly in an emergency. Emergency controls should be clearly identified, regularly tested and kept free from obstruction. Workers should know the location and operation of these controls.
