Reprography refers to the process of reproducing or copying documents, texts, images, drawings, photographs, and other forms of recorded information by using mechanical, electrical, optical, or digital technologies. The term is derived from “reproduction” and “graphy,” meaning writing or recording. In the field of Information and Communication Technologies, reprography plays an important role in creating multiple copies of information quickly and efficiently. It is widely used in libraries, offices, educational institutions, research organizations, publishing houses, and business establishments for preserving, sharing, and distributing information. Reprographic methods can be broadly classified into conventional and modern methods. The major methods are as follows: Photocopying is one of the most common reprographic methods. It uses a photocopying machine to reproduce a document on paper. The original document is exposed to light, and its image is transferred to a photosensitive surface. Toner is then applied and fixed onto another sheet of paper. Photocopying is fast, convenient, and suitable for producing a limited or large number of copies. Modern photocopiers can also enlarge, reduce, collate, and scan documents. Mimeography is an older duplicating method used for producing multiple copies of typed or handwritten documents. A stencil is prepared by creating small openings corresponding to the text or image. Ink is forced through these openings onto sheets of paper. Mimeography was widely used
