A thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary tool used for organizing, indexing, storing, and retrieving information effectively. In Information Processing and Retrieval, a thesaurus provides a structured set of terms representing concepts in a particular subject field and indicates the relationships among those terms. Unlike an ordinary dictionary, which mainly explains meanings and usage of words, an information retrieval thesaurus is concerned with controlling terminology so that the same concept can be represented consistently during indexing and searching.
