For example, if a segment has sales of ₹10,00,000 and variable costs of ₹6,00,000, its contribution is ₹4,00,000. A higher contribution generally indicates that the segment is making a stronger contribution toward organizational profitability. However, contribution should be interpreted along with fixed costs and other relevant factors. Another important measure is segment margin. Segment margin is generally calculated by deducting traceable fixed costs from contribution.
