Horizontal integration takes place between firms operating at the same level of the value chain, whereas vertical integration involves combining different stages of the same production or distribution process. Horizontal integration refers to a strategy in which a company expands by acquiring, merging with, or combining with another company that operates in the same industry and usually at the same stage of production or distribution. In simple words, a company joins with another company that is engaged in a similar type of business. The main purpose is generally to increase market share, reduce competition, achieve economies of scale and strengthen the company's position in the industry. For example, if one automobile manufacturer acquires another automobile manufacturer, it represents horizontal integration because both companies operate at approximately the same level of the automobile industry. Similarly, when one bank merges with another bank offering similar financial services, the combination can be considered horizontal integration. A major advantage of horizontal integration is the increase in market share. When two competing businesses combine, the resulting organisation can serve a larger number of customers and may obtain a stronger position in the market. This can make it easier for the company to compete with other major firms. The organisation may also gain greater bargaining power with suppliers, distributors and other business partners. Another important benefit is economies of scale. A larger company can produce goods or provide services in greater quantities and may spread fixed costs over a larger volume of output.
