The Balanced Scorecard is a strategic management framework used by organizations to translate their vision and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance objectives and measures. It was developed by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton in the early 1990s as a response to the limitations of traditional performance measurement systems that focused mainly on financial indicators. The basic idea behind the Balanced Scorecard is that organizational performance should be viewed from multiple perspectives rather than through financial results alone. The traditional framework consists of four major perspectives: financial, customer, internal business process, and learning and growth. These perspectives are interconnected and help an organization convert its strategic objectives into measurable actions. The financial perspective examines whether the organization's strategy is contributing to improved financial performance. It focuses on outcomes that matter to owners, shareholders and other financial stakeholders. Common measures include revenue growth, profitability, return on capital employed, cash flow, cost reduction, economic value added and market share. Financial objectives may differ according to the organization's stage of development. A growing organization may emphasize sales growth and investment, while a mature organization may focus more strongly on profitability and efficient use of resources. In the Balanced Scorecard, financial performance represents an important ultimate outcome of successful strategy implementation. The customer perspective considers how the organization is viewed by its customers and whether it is creating sufficient value for them. Customer satisfaction, customer retention, acquisition of new customers, market share, brand image, delivery performance and perceived product or service quality are commonly used measures. Organizations must understand their target customers and identify what they value most. For example, some customers may prioritize low prices, while others may emphasize quality, innovation, convenience or rapid service. Strategic objectives in this perspective help organizations develop a clear value proposition and align their activities with customer expectations. The internal business process perspective focuses on the processes that must operate effectively to achieve customer and financial objectives. It examines areas such as innovation, production, operations, quality management, supply chain efficiency, service delivery and after-sales support. Organizations identify the critical processes in which they need to excel. For example, a manufacturing organization may focus on reducing production defects and delivery time, whereas a service organization may emphasize reducing customer waiting time and improving service reliability. The purpose is not simply to measure existing processes but to identify and improve those processes that are strategically important. The learning and growth perspective addresses the capabilities that enable an organization to improve continuously and achieve its long-term objectives. It focuses on human resources, organizational culture, technology, knowledge management and employee capabilities. Measures may include employee training hours, employee satisfaction, staff retention, skills development, innovation capability and the availability of information systems. Employees and organizational capabilities are considered fundamental drivers of improvement in internal processes, customer value and ultimately financial performance.
